The Italian tax year, on one page
Italy does not remind you. There is no annual statement, no assessment in the post, no text message the week before. The deadlines simply arrive, and the penalty regime starts counting the following morning. This page is the whole year in one place — print it, or let us hold it for you.
The fixed dates
Applies to a private non-resident owner letting residential property. Dates falling on a weekend or public holiday shift to the next working day.
First half of the year
Second half of the year
What each one actually is
The two IMU dates are not a bill split in two. June is a provisional payment on last year's rates; December settles the year at the rates the municipality actually approved. Municipalities do change them, which is why paying the June figure twice is a common and avoidable error.
The June income tax date carries two payments at once — last year's balance and the first instalment towards the current year. Owners who budget only for the balance are regularly caught out by the size of the June transfer.
31 October is the filing date, not the payment date. Missing it is a separate breach from paying late, with its own penalty, even if the tax was paid in full in June.
What late costs
Paid within 30 days → around 1.5% of the tax.
Paid within 90 days → around 1.7%.
Paid within the year → around 3.75%.
Return never filed → the penalty regime moves from a percentage of the tax to a multiple of it.
These are the reduced rates available through ravvedimento operoso, and only while the tax office has not yet acted. Once an assessment issues, the reductions disappear. If you already have missed years behind you, that is a different procedure — see our guide on undeclared rental income.
Paying from abroad
Everything on this calendar is paid by F24, the Italian unified payment form, which needs the correct tax codes, the municipality's code for IMU, and the year. Without an Italian bank account the form must be settled through an authorised intermediary — which is how we do it for clients, along with the dated receipt that proves the payment was made on time.
